Metadata Isn’t Sexy, But It’s Making You Invisible

You’re Not Invisible Because You Suck. It’s Your Metadata.
If your website looks gorgeous but no one’s clicking on it in search results, we need to talk. You might think Google is snubbing you—but more likely, your metadata just sucks. It’s not sexy, it’s not flashy, but it’s one of the most critical parts of SEO. And most people ignore it or screw it up.
Let’s fix that.
What Even Is Metadata?
Metadata is the behind-the-scenes info that tells Google (and searchers) what your page is about. The two biggies:
- Meta Title: What appears as the blue link in search results
-
Meta Description: The sentence or two below that gives context
That’s it. But these two things can make or break your visibility.
Why Metadata Matters More Than You Think
Let’s break it down:
- Meta titles help Google understand and rank your page.
- Meta descriptions help humans decide whether to click.
-
Better metadata = higher click-through rates = more traffic (even if you’re not the #1 result).
Example:
- Bad Title: "Home"
-
Good Title: "Handmade Soy Candles | Gift Sets for Relaxation & Moms"

How to Write Metadata That Actually Works
1. Keep It Short, Sharp, and Specific
- Meta Titles: Aim for 50–60 characters
-
Meta Descriptions: Aim for 120–155 characters
2. Include Keywords (Without Keyword Vomit)
- Put your most important phrase at the beginning of the title
-
Use natural language—not a list of keywords from 2007
3. Give People a Reason to Click
- Highlight benefits, urgency, or unique offers
- Speak to pain points or desires
4. Make It Unique for Every Page
- No copy-pasting across multiple pages
- Each page has a different job—so give it a different title and description
Metadata Formula (Because We Love a Cheat Sheet)
Meta Title: [Primary Keyword] | [Benefit or Brand Name]
Meta Description: [What the page offers] + [Why it matters or what action to take]
Example for a Product Page:
- Title: "Lavender Soy Candle | Calm Your Mind Naturally"
- Description: "Our lavender candle soothes stress and sets the vibe. Hand-poured and gift-ready. Order yours now."
Example for a Blog Post:
- Title: "How to Use Google Console Without Losing Your Mind"
- Description: "A beginner’s guide to Google Console that shows you what to check and how to fix SEO issues fast."
How to Check (and Fix) Your Metadata
- Use a browser extension like SEO Meta in 1 Click
- Use Yoast or RankMath if you’re on WordPress
- Manually inspect your code if you’re a bit more techy
Start with:
- Homepage
- Top products or services
- Any page you’re linking to in ads, social, or email
